Golden Globe Awards Nominations 2014

The nominations for 2014 Golden Globes were announced a while ago. "12 Years a Slave" and "American Hustle" lead the pack with seven nominations each. The former got nominated for picture-drama, actor, supporting actor, supporting actress, screenplay and original score while the latter for picture-comedy or musical, director, screenplay and for its four actors. Some surprise nominations for "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" in actor, original score and original song category. "Rush" and "Philomena" made it in best picture drama as well. The comedy or musical category has overall the more interesting and stronger nominees in my opinion. Martin Scorsese and The Coen Brothers weren't nominated for director and both their movies also failed to get nominations in screenplay category. "Saving Mr. Banks" was missing in the main category as well as "Lee Daniels' The Butler" was completely shut out. A big shock considering Oprah Winfrey above all was bound to get the love. "Labor Day" wasn't a hit with the critics and isn't a major contender but Kate Winslet was predicted to get that last spot in actress-drama category. Personally, a delight to see actresses like Julie Delpy and Greta Gerwig making it thanks to the fact that HFPA breaks down their nominations into drama and comedy/musical. "The Wind Rises" was nominated in foreign language film instead while "Monsters University" was absent from animated feature list which just had three nominees in it. Overall, not too bad with the distribution of love. I never take Golden Globes seriously even for their entertainment factor but I'll give it to this year for being so excellent in films.
