2016 Golden Globe Awards Winners

The Revenant

The HFPA never cease to shock people, either for their predictability or pandering. This season has been the most strangest and bonkers thing so far. Everybody is going their own way. Its all scattered.

I didn't see the ceremony nor am I going to. Plus the death of one Mr. David Bowie really brought me down. May he forever rest in peace surrounded by other stars who shine bright more than ever in the sky.

Back to HFPA's drool fest, THE REVENANT shockingly won best picture and director award for Alejandro González Iñárritu. Something not many truly expected to see happen. It was Spotlight, Fury Road or Miller/Scott which many were predicting. Is this the Globes trying to make up for Birdman/Iñárritu losing last year? Did they love this film that much? Former. Plus the hype. The Leo hype. The difficult production hype. Leonardo DiCaprio won best actor drama which is not a surprise. That's 3 wins for the film. Academy next with this hyper hype hopping?

The Big Short went home empty handed when it was thought to win best picture comedy. That prize went to THE MARTIAN. Acting winners were pretty much expected. Then there was Kate Winslet, surprise winner of best supporting actress for STEVE JOBS which also won screenplay. They love Winslet, can't blame them but the screenplay win too really, one could have seen it coming if one wanted to. Still a surprise.

Did I mention that SPECTRE title song won best original song? Yeah the most loathed song... but Sam Smith is a big thing and hype is hip so.

73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards Nomination

Carol

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the nominees for 2016 Golden Globe Awards. CAROL leads the bunch with 5 nominations for picture drama, director, both Blanchett and Mara in lead and score. It surprisingly didn't get a screenplay nod. MAD MAX: FURY ROAD got in for both picture drama and director but no score. THE REVENANT got nominations for picture drama, director, lead actor DiCaprio and score. That and THE BIG SHORT were second most nominated films. The latter film just seems to rise and rise having done well at SAG as well. It got screenplay and two lead actor nominations apart from best picture musical or comedy. Talking about that category, other nominations included THE MARTIAN, JOY, TRAINWRECK and SPY. The Martian also got nods for its director and lead actor, Joy for its lead actress, Trainwreck and Spy also for their lead actresses.

SPOTLIGHT have had a seriously strange situation in the last 48 hours. Yet again it has not been nominated for its male stars, any stars to be exact here. It got director and screenplay nods only apart from picture. Last film in drama category would be ROOM which did quite well here despite my post-SAG doubts. It managed to get three nods which also included a sure bet lead actress as well as screenplay. Alicia Vikander got double nominations. Both Cranston and Mirren are nominated as well. YOUTH got song and supporting actress nods but not for Michael Caine. Will Smith is nominated for CONCUSSION and Johnny Depp isn't for BLACK MASS. Michael Shannon gets another shoutout for 99 HOMES. Idris Elba and Sylvester Stallone are nominated. Paul Dano too. THE HATEFUL EIGHT and STEVE JOBS got notices for their screenplay, score and actors. Check out the full list of nominees below:

72nd Golden Globe Awards Winners

HFPA gave out their annual awards last night in a ceremony full of jokes and drunk folks, I can only assume because I wasn't able to watch it myself. So the Globes winner for best picture drama 2014 is "Boyhood", as predicted by everybody. The film also won awards for its director Richard Linklater and supporting actress Patricia Arquette. A great win for the film that it is and also for the kind of filmmaking Mr. Linklater has been so great at. Continuing his love for films where the idea of time and relationships are explored. On the comedy/musical side, "The Grand Budapest Hotel" won the big prize over "Birdman", a film I am sure everyone was predicting to win. The Wes Anderson directed film was my pick for screenplay instead but Birdman won that award, funny! The acting prizes all went to the predicted ones except for best actress in a comedy/musical which went to Amy Adams for "Big Eyes", I had Emily Blunt and Julianne Moore predicted for that. This is Adams' second consecutive win after "American Hustle" last year. Golden Globes had more surprises in stored as well. The foreign language award went to Russia's "Levitathan" over popular choices "Ida" and "Force Majeure". Animated award went to "How To Train Your Dragon 2" over "The Lego Movie". I was a bit confused predicting original score which I thought will go to either "Interstellar" or "Birdman" but instead, they gave it to "The Theory of Everything", boring! So what does Golden Globes tell us? Well they told us what was already being established that its between Boyhood-Birdman-The Grand Budapest Hotel. Keaton vs Redmayne and Julianne Moore will finally win something from the Academy.

Golden Globe Awards 2014 Nominations

The 72nd Golden Globe Awards Nominations were just announced. "Boyhood", "Birdman", "The Imitation Game" etc reaped the most nods. In the drama section, "Gone Girl" was nominated for director, screenplay, lead actress, score... but no best picture. "Selma" had a surprising presence with nominations for picture, lead actor and director while "Unbroken" was completely shut out, a film I thought would be HFPA's IT film. Filling in that spot was "Foxcatcher". Jennifer Aniston gets nominated for "Cake" again, is she the 5th Oscar spot we were not sure about?

In the comedy/musical category, "The Grand Budapest Hotel" got nominated for picture, lead actor, director and screenplay, which is just superb. While "Inherent Vice" missed out on the main nod, its actor Joaquin Phoenix was nominated. "St. Vincent" was shown some love over it while British film "Pride" as predicted got nominated too. Of course "Birdman" ruled with nominations for picture, screenplay, director, original score, lead actor, supporting actor and supporting actress. Some surprises too with Hellen Mirren and Quvenzhane Wallis. Happy to see Julianne Moore and Jessica Chastain in the mix. I predicted "Interstellar" would get a single nod for its score and that happened. Now excuse my rambling and please check out the full list below:

70th Annual Golden Globe Awards 2013 Winners.

So the Golden Globe Awards happened last night where top prizes were given to movies like Argo and Les Miserables. I have yet to see the ceremony, i heard some good things about it (mostly the speeches and funny drunken celebrities). So Argo took home the award for best picture drama while Ben Affleck was awarded the director prize. Now i was hoping Lincoln to win the former award while the later one was expected. But i was silly to think that the HFPA will love a pure American flick over a movie like Argo which is exactly the kind of movie they love. On the other hand, Les Miserables won the Comedy/Musical prize which as much as i knew was going to happen since they can't resist awarding such big musicals over much smaller indie comedies (poor Juno and Little Miss Sunshine) but i still hoped that Silver Linings Playbook would win. So what does these two wins means for the Oscars? Nothing! First of all people should never take Golden Globes seriously (something to do every year) and secondly, this year is a complete surprise-fest so no one is a real contender, no one is sure winner unless they win. For me, Silver Linings Playbook and Lincoln are still the likeliest movies to win, Academy doesn't care for the HFPA and they rarely match up as far as the winners go.

Other thing to keep in mind is that Oscar nominations were announced after BFCA and HFPA turned in their ballots so the Oscar snubs shouldn't have had much of an impact in both of these ceremonies that is why Argo and Ben Affleck won at both Critics Choice and the Golden Globes. Talking about some surprises, Tarantino won original screenplay for Django Unchained while Christoph Waltz won supporting actor for the same movie. HFPA loves Tarantino but his win over Tony Kushner and Chris Terrio makes little sense here. Waltz for me was the second most likeliest to win after Tommy Lee Jones. Brave won best animated film, they love Pixar no matter what. Frankenweenie deserved it while Wreck-It Ralph was likeliest to win. I am particularly happy for Jessica Chastain who won for Zero Dark Thirty and as far as other acting winners go, Daniel Day-Lewis, Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence and Anne Hathaway won for their respective movies which was predictable. Life of Pi was definitely in to win the score award while no one can resist the superbly sung Adele song. Michael Haneke winning for Amour is a class act because HFPA are known for going towards an opposite route when it comes to foreign movies. Everyone knew Amour was winning but The Intouchables was likeliest to win. Overall, i think this year's awards race have been the most interesting one so far. Now all eyes are on the DGA, PGA and specially the freaking SAGs as they will give us just an idea of what to expect at the Oscars because this year is a different thing. I repeat, no one is a frontrunner.

Golden Globe Awards 2013 Nominations.

HPFA announced their nominations for 2013 Golden Globe Awards. Argo, Lincoln, Zero Dark Thirty, Life of Pi and Django Unchained got nominated for Best Picture Drama while Les Miserables, Silver Linings Playbook, Moonrise Kingdom, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and a surprising Salmon Fishing in Yemen got nominated for Best Picture Comedy or Musical. Salmon Fishing also got nominated in Actor and Actress categories of Comedy/Musical with Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt. The Master, Beasts of the Southern Wild failed to get nominated in Picture category. In Best Lead Actor Drama category, Richard Gere got nominated for Arbitrage which is well deserved and i hope he gets notice more for his brilliant performance in the movie now. A very wonderful surprise specially for me was Rachel Weisz's nomination in Lead Actress Drama category for The Deep Blue Sea, you all know i loved her in that movie.

Apart from Jack Black got nominated for Lead Actor Comedy or Musical for his wonderful performance in Bernie which is again a superb choice. Django Unchained got a big boost for sure because it was nominated in Picture, Director, Screenplay and then both Christoph Waltz and Leonardo DiCaprio got nominated in Supporting Actor category. ParaNorman was snubbed in favor of Hotel Transylvania in Animated category while Kon-Tiki made a surprising appearance in Foreign Language Film category along with the other predicted ones.
