Best Film Editing Nominees:
1. The Artist
2. The Descendants
3. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
4. Hugo
5. Moneyball
My Take:
Well most of the time, a movie that is either a frontrunner or one of the two or three frontrunners wins film editing. Also movies that get them are considered strong movies in terms of their overall success on the awards day. And there are greater chances for a movie outside the radar to get nomination too like this year The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo which no doubt had a almost pitch perfect editing. Last year The Social Network had one of the most flawless editing i saw in years, or maybe ever and this year among the nominees, that movie is Moneyball and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I haven't seen Hugo which once again has a good chance of winning too and on the other hand if you go through that rule or Academy's tradition that i wrote at the beginning, the two frontrunners are The Artist and The Descendants so yeah it can be anyone. It is a tough one in this category this year quite surprisingly for a technical category and i really appreciate it, would be fun to see who wins.
My Picks:
Moneyball and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Best Cinematography Nominees:
1. The Artist
2. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
3. Hugo
4. The Tree of Life
5. War Horse
My Take:
There isn't any doubt in saying that Tree of Life is just out there, the frontrunner and the most deserving of them all. It won almost every award for Cinematography from critics all over, the most wins. The Artist being a frontrunner for best Picture and Hugo being the possible Oscar technical awards sweeper can really hurt its chances but still Tree of Life deserves it and yes i can see it winning too but you don't know what or when something unbelivable happen in the Oscars only. Also The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo whose presence in a few technical nominees really shows how powerful this movie visually was and that is the best thing about this kind of disappointing remake from the great David Fincher. War Horse is a very good looking movie with wonderful locations and camera work and i can't help but appreciate it for that but still!
My Picks:
The Tree of Life and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Best Visual Effects Nominees:
1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
2. Hugo
3. Real Steel
4. Rise of the Planet of the Apes
5. Transformers: Dark of the Moon
My Take:
Well this is a category i like to speak a lot about, first of all Real Steel? what is going here? I'll be honest, it doesn't deserve its nomination. Transformers: Dark of the Moon was hilariously awful but it had some great VFX which is not denying but not for the most of part just the end and its all over done as usual. Hugo is a movie as i said, i haven't seen but it looks stunning and has a very geniune and to the point use of effects. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 had one of the best effects though it all seems to have been done before in the other Potter movies but this time they were big and just gigantic but the lack of interest in this saga from Academy really hurts its chances so the real players here are Hugo and the one and only Rise of the Planet of the Apes which os definitely winning this category for sure. One of the best and probably the most helpful effects i have seen where all the Apes presented the Na'avi people from Avatar capturing every emotion from the faces of the actors through this WETA thing and telling us this story where the Apes didn't needed to talk in order to convey what they were thinking and stuff but their face tells you everything while not still looking very weird.
My Pick:
Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
