Academy Awards 2015 Predictions (The Battle of Boys and Birds)

Welcome to my second last Oscars nomination predictions for the year. Next time would be my last. So awards race huh? Boyhood has been pretty much winning everything with Birdman behind it. They are both after each other with one probably having a broader appeal across the board and the other mostly adored by the acting branch of the Academy with some technical support. Beyond these two it is anyone's game. Academy will go for 9 nominations as it usually does. It is difficult to come up with a list of nine potential nominees, it always is because you are predicting what 'they' would like more or to be honest, what they would like to see get nominated. Beyond Boyhood and Birdman the critics darlings, you have the two Brit-genius men-biopics as well as Selma. Those would make perfect five when it comes to Academy. Go a little further and you have other films with critical appeal and perhaps their own particular cinematic charm that one would expect be enough for the Academy. I am talking about Whiplash and The Grand Budapest Hotel. After that, you have a few films battling to get in the final few tight spots. Academy's voting process has baffled me for quite a few years. What happened to 5 choices for 5 nominees? Or 10 for 10? At one side you have films like Gone Girl, Unbroken, Foxcatcher and Nightcrawler. Then on the further outside, A Most Violent Year, Into the Woods, American Sniper and Interstellar. Can they make it? Who knows? I am confident about my 1-8 choices though.

Even in the best director category, Linklater, Inarritu and DuVernay would be my best bets. When you talk about acting categories. Jennifer Aniston has come up as a surprise contender. Then you have Robert Duvall who may benefit from the weak category. Jake Gyllenhaal would probably surprise, he has got lots of traction for his performance from critics. He does face a battle with Steve Carell though. I have never been great at predicting many of the technical categories (except editing and cinematography). Well, below are my predictions based on their best chance at a nomination:

BEST PICTURE:-

1. Boyhood
2. Birdman
3. Selma
4. The Imitation Game
5. The Theory of Everything
6. Whiplash
7. The Grand Budapest Hotel
8. Gone Girl
9. Unbroken

Alternate: Foxcatcher

Nevada Film Critics Society Awards 2014

Very interesting choices from the Nevada Film Critics Society in their 2014 awards announcement. "Gone Girl" won its first best picture prize with the group, they also awarded Rosamund Pike from the film. The only two awards won by the David Fincher directed thriller. Boy is Julianne Moore loosing steam. Anyways, "Nightcrawler" was the big winner of the night winning awards for director (Dan Gilroy), lead actor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and for screenplay. "Boyhood" won awards for youth performance and supporting actress, Patricia Arquette had a tie with Jessica Chastain. "Interstellar" wins its second cinematography prize of the season. Check out the full list of winners below:

Best Film - Gone Girl

"Gone Girl", "Whiplash" and "Interstellar" all won two awards each. Check out the full list of winners below:

Las Vegas Film Critics Society Awards 2014

Las Vegas Film Critics Society announced their winners a short while ago. "Birdman" had yet another sweep, "Boyhood" yet again a no show. This is troubling! The Alejandro González Iñárritu directed film won picture, director, lead actor, screenplay, cinematography, score and ensemble. Reese Witherspoon has another win for "Wild" while Tilda Swinton won supporting actress for her strangely fascinating performance in "Snowpiercer". This group had a unique pick for costume design, awarding it to "Guardians of the Galaxy" which also won best action film. They had many awards to give, there is a big list of them which you can check out below. Oh and LVFCS gets plus points for awarding the song "I Love You All" from "Frank". Check out the winners:

Phoenix Critics Circle Awards 2014

"Force Majeure" and "Ida" tied for best international film. They also gave some genre awards to best comedy, sci-fi/horror and mystery/thriller films which is cool. 20th Annual Critics Choice Awards Nominations

20th Annual Critics Choice Awards nominations were just announced. The BFCA awarded maximum nominations to films like Birdman, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Boyhood, Gone Girl etc. In the best picture category, Unbroken and Nightcrawler made it alongside the already mentioned films. The Imitation Game, The Theory of Everything, Selma and Whiplash also made up the list. That means, films like Foxcatcher and A Most Violent Year weren't nominated, which I predicted instead of the Dan Gilroy and Angelina Jolie directed films. Anyways, the full line up gives one an understanding of the overall consensus that seems to have been building up this awards season. It is not too far fetched of an idea to think that the Academy may go for these nominees as well.

Foxcatcher missed on many nominations (lead actor, screenplay, director) but Mark Ruffalo was nominated. Inherent Vice had a nice presence in categories, supporting actor, adapted screenplay, art direction and costume design. Amy Adams yet again missed out on a nomination while Jennifer Anniston made it, so did the wonderful Marion Cotillard. Reese Witherspoon's co-star in Wild, Laura Dern missed out as well but Tilda Swinton was nominated in supporting actress category. Their choices mostly looks nice but nothing too out of the ordinary, very much in tuned with the rest of them. Not complaining!

Below is the full list of all the nominees:

Best Picture:
"Birdman"
"Boyhood"
"Gone Girl"
"The Grand Budapest Hotel"
"The Imitation Game"
"Nightcrawler"
"Selma"
"The Theory of Everything"
"Unbroken"
"Whiplash"

Kansas City Film Critics Circle Awards 2014

Kansas City Film Critics Circle announced their winners. "Birdman" won big time with four wins in categories, picture, lead actor for Michael Keaton, supporting actor for Edward Norton and for its original screenplay. "Boyhood" won two for director Richard Linklater and supporting actress Patricia Arquette. The brilliant Rosamund Pike won her first award of this season for "Gone Girl" which is a big surprise, however the biggest shock would be "Obvious Child" winning adapted screenplay. Good on them. Golden Globe Awards 2014 Nominations

The 72nd Golden Globe Awards Nominations were just announced. "Boyhood", "Birdman", "The Imitation Game" etc reaped the most nods. In the drama section, "Gone Girl" was nominated for director, screenplay, lead actress, score... but no best picture. "Selma" had a surprising presence with nominations for picture, lead actor and director while "Unbroken" was completely shut out, a film I thought would be HFPA's IT film. Filling in that spot was "Foxcatcher". Jennifer Aniston gets nominated for "Cake" again, is she the 5th Oscar spot we were not sure about?

In the comedy/musical category, "The Grand Budapest Hotel" got nominated for picture, lead actor, director and screenplay, which is just superb. While "Inherent Vice" missed out on the main nod, its actor Joaquin Phoenix was nominated. "St. Vincent" was shown some love over it while British film "Pride" as predicted got nominated too. Of course "Birdman" ruled with nominations for picture, screenplay, director, original score, lead actor, supporting actor and supporting actress. Some surprises too with Hellen Mirren and Quvenzhane Wallis. Happy to see Julianne Moore and Jessica Chastain in the mix. I predicted "Interstellar" would get a single nod for its score and that happened. Now excuse my rambling and please check out the full list below:

Best Motion Picture - Drama:
"Boyhood"
"Foxcatcher"
"The Imitation Game"
"Selma"
"The Theory of Everything"

Screen Actors Guild Awards 2014 Nominations

The nominations for 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced a while ago. The usual and typical aside, there were some shocking snubs and nominations. Delighted to see the cast of "The Grand Budapest Hotel" being recognized for best ensemble whereas films like Gone Girl, Selma, Foxcatcher and Into the Woods are missing. The latter two were my predictions. The SAG members did nominate the two British biopics and the lead frontrunners, "Boyhood" and "Birdman". The biggest surprise in leading actor category came with Jake Gyllenhaal for "Nightcrawler" who I thought was going to be sadly overlooked. Does this mean he should look forward to his name being called again for Oscars nominations? While you have Gyllenhaal and four other usual suspects there, David Oyelowo, whom I predicted wasn't nominated. Supporting category had one big shocker. Who actually thought Naomi Watts would get a nod for "St. Vincent"? Finally, the biggest 'WTF' among the nominees this year is Jennifer Aniston for "Cake". Boy did they pushed her for a nom, good for them. Hillary Swank, Amy Adams... not their day. Very lukewarm list of contenders overall. I just hope somehow, Academy nominations are slightly more appealing, strong and diverse.

Here is the full list of nominations:

Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture:
- Birdman (Zach Galifianakis, Michael Keaton, Edward Norton, Andrea Riseborough, Amy Ryan, Emma Stone and Naomi Watts)

Washington DC Area Film Critics Association Awards 2014

Another day, another critics group announces their winners. "Boyhood" continues to sweep in the picture and director category, the Washington DC Area critics also gave it two more awards in supporting actress and youth performance category for Patricia Arquette and Ellar Coltrane respectively. The biggest winner however happened to be "Birdman" which won five awards including actor for Michael Keaton, original screenplay, editing, cinematography and acting ensemble. Gillian Flynn wins her first critic award this year for adapting her own novel, "Gone Girl". "Force Majeure" won foreign language film, whereas previous groups have went for such films as Ida, Two Days One Night and Wild Tales. Marion Cotillard failed to repeat her recent awards success with other groups here, the best actress prize was instead given to Julianne Moore for "Still Alice". "The Grand Budapest Hotel" wins another art direction award, something I hope it repeats at the Oscars. And Mica Levi won an award for her uniquely brilliant score in "Under the Skin".
