Utah Film Critics Association Awards 2013

It was "Gravity" that was the big winner at the Utah Film Critics Association Awards, winning both picture and director along with cinematography. That makes its second best picture award from US critics. But that wasn't the most surprising thing here. Bill Nighy won supporting actor award for "About Time" which is something I wasn't expecting to happen, ever! Also "The World's End" was a surprise winner of original screenplay. Such out of field choices.

Below is the full list of the winners.

Best Picture: Gravity

Best Director: Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity

Nevada Film Critics Society Awards 2013

Nevada Film Critics Society awarded "12 Years a Slave" as the best film of 2013. Alfonso Cuaron once again won for "Gravity". The biggest surprise here however is Meryl Streep winning her first critics award this year for "August: Osage County". They don't have much categories but "Gravity" and "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" won the few technical awards.

Below is the full list of the winners:

Best Film:
12 Years a Slave

Best Director:
Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity)

Dec 19, 2013

Florida Film Critics Circle Awards 2013

Florida Film Critics Circle awarded best picture prize to "12 Years a Slave". It won 5 other awards as well which includes 2 for Lupita Nyong'o, director Steve McQueen, actor Chiwetel Ejiofor and for adapted screenplay. Nothing out of the ordinary in other categories. Most of the winners here are the ones winning most of the awards in their categories.

Below is the full list of the winners.

Best Picture: 12 Years a Slave

Best Director: Steve McQueen, 12 Years a Slave

Las Vegas Film Critics Society Awards 2013

"12 Years a Slave" was the big winner at the Las Vegas Film Critics Awards where it won a total of 5 awards. That includes picture, director, supporting actress, score and costume design. Emma Thompson interestingly won actress award for her performance in "Saving Mr. Banks". Matthew McConaughey has been gaining some momentum as well in the actor category. As usual, "Gravity" won many of the technical awards while Spike Jonze was given screenplay award for "Her".

Below is the list of all the winners.

Best Picture:

Austin Film Critics Association Awards 2013

"Her" was the big winner at the Austin Film Critics Association Awards where it won 4 awards for picture, original screenplay, score and a special award for Scarlett Johansson. "Gravity" took awards for director Alfonso Cuaron and for cinematography. Brie Larson won best actress and breakthrough awards for her performance in "Short Term 12". Quite interesting picks.

Below is the full list of the winners:

Best Film: Her

Best Director: Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity

Phoenix Film Critics Society Awards 2013

"12 Years a Slave" may have won the main prize from the Phoenix Film Critics Society but it was "Gravity" that won the most. As usual the picture/director split happened. "Nebraska" was given original screenplay which is interesting. "Gravity" literally won all the technical awards and they have a bunch of other interesting special categories as well.

Below is the full list of all the winners.

Chicago Film Critics Association Awards 2013

Chicago Film Critics Association announced their winners and as expected, "12 Years a Slave" was the big winner. The Steve McQueen directed film won 5 awards. "The Act of Killing" was awarded both documentary and foreign language film prizes. While Spike Jonze's "Her" won for its original screenplay and score.

Southeastern Film Critics Association Awards 2013

"12 Years a Slave" was the big winner with the Southeastern Film Critics Association as it won 5 awards there. That is for picture, director, actor, supporting actress and adapted screenplay. Jared Leto and Cate Blanchett continues to win everything as does the other two actors from "12 Years a Slave". Original screenplay prize was awarded to "Her" which has been winning throughout the season but on irregular basis. On the other hand, "The Hunt" was awarded best foreign language film instead of the Cannes winner.

Below is the full list of the winners.

Best Picture: 12 Years a Slave

Best Director: Steve McQueen, 12 Years a Slave

Online Film Critics Society Awards 2013

Online Film Critics Society announced their winners yesterday. "12 Years a Slave" and "Gravity" experienced a similar split yet again. Michael Fassbender won for the second time from a critics body. "The Wind Rises" won animated film after a while, "Frozen" was winning many. I really liked their nominations list, they were one of my favorites. Pretty reasonable picks that looks typical because of the recurring sort of go-to picks that most of critics are choosing but still, they were the best with their nominations choices.

Below is the full list of the winners:

Best Picture: 12 Years a Slave

Best Director: Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity

Dallas-Fort Worth Film Critics Association Awards 2013

Dallas-Fort Worth Film Critics Association announced their winners for this year. Both "12 Years a Slave" and "Gravity" had a strong showing. They also loved "Dallas Buyers Club" a lot of course as it won for its two actors and was #5 on their top 10 list. Similar picture/director split happened between both the frontrunners. "20 Feet From Stardom" won their documentary award.

Below is the full list of the winners.

Best Picture: 12 Years a Slave

Best Director: Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity

St. Louis Film Critics Awards 2013

St. Louis Film Critics announced their awards yesterday with "12 Years a Slave" winning 7 awards. Best film, director, actor, supporting actress, adapted screenplay, cinematography (which it shared with "Gravity") and best scene. "Blackfish" won best documentary while "Her" won best score.

Here is a complete list of all the winners.

Best Film: 12 Years a Slave

Best Director: Steve McQueen, 12 Years a Slave

Critics Choice Award Nominations 2013

The BFCA announced their nominations and as usual, they look more like what Oscars nominations would be then say... 'Critics Choice'. Their awards ceremony seems more like MTV awards and their choices as I said, never truly reflect what critics usually think. Most of their members are bloggers and Internet awards pundits so well! Anyways, "12 Years a Slave" and "American Hustle" leads with 13 nominations each. I don't care about their extra categories for action/comedy etc but looking at their main slate, it is predictable. If I can even call them snubs then the absence of both the actresses from "Blue is the Warmest Color" and Julie Delpy from "Before Midnight" are a big question mark. Their best picture lineup looks exactly like what Academy would choose if they were to nominate ten films. Other than that, nothing quite great or interesting.

Here is a complete list of all the nominees:

Best Picture:

12 Years a Slave
American Hustle
Captain Phillips
Dallas Buyers Club
Gravity
Her
Inside Llewyn Davis
Nebraska
Saving Mr. Banks
The Wolf of Wall Street

Indiana Film Journalists Association Awards 2013

Indiana Film Journalists Association announced their award winners. "12 Years a Slave" was crowned with the best picture prize. Director Steve McQueen, actor Chiwetel Ejiofor and composer Hans Zimmer also won in their respective categories for the film. Adele Exarchopoulos won best actress award for "Blue is the Warmest Color" which is interesting while Barkhad Abdi won supporting actor for "Captain Phillips" which is rare. The screenplay awards were given to "Her" and "Before Midnight" while "Frozen" won animated film, which it has been winning a lot from the last few days.

Below is the full list of the winners.

San Francisco Film Critics Circle Awards 2013

San Francisco Film Critics Circle announced their winners for this year yesterday on Twitter. "12 Years a Slave" and "Gravity" once again had a picture/director split which has become a regular thing now. The former film won three awards while the latter film won four. James Franco got supporting actor award and Jennifer Lawrence won supporting actress for their films. "Gravity" also got the three technical prizes for editing, cinematography and production design.

Below is the full list of winners.

Best Picture: 12 Years a Slave

Best Director: Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity

Kansas City Film Critics Circle Awards 2013

Kansas City critics announced their winners for this year. "12 Years a Slave" was the big winner with six awards including best picture. There was a tie in the director category with the winners being both Alfonso Cuaron and Steve McQueen. Sandra Bullock yet again won another award from critics, alarming! (I mean for Blanchett). But the highlight here has to be the fact that Michael Fassbender won his first award in supporting category for "12 Years a Slave" this year. There was another tie as well between "Frozen" and "Despicable Me 2" in the animation category.

Below is the full list of the winners.

Best Picture: 12 Years a Slave

Best Director: Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity and Steve McQueen, 12 Years a Slave (Tie)

Houston Film Critics Society Awards 2013

Houston Film Critics Society announced their winners for this year. "12 Years a Slave" won the best picture prize while Alfonso Cuaron won best director for "Gravity". These splits between both the movies are happening quite often, I wonder if this is how it is going to turn out at the Oscars as well? Both these films were the big winners here, each won four awards. Sandra Bullock was awarded actress prize, "The Hunt" won best foreign language film which is great and "Please Mr. Kennedy" from "Inside Llewyn Davis" was awarded best original song award.

Below is the full list of the nominations and the winners, both were announced simultaneously.

Mid-December Academy Award Nominations 2014 Predictions

With nominations for SAG and Golden Globes recently announced and the ongoing slew of critics awards happening, I guess it has become a bit clearer now. Still there is no formed consensus or a linear path. The nominations and wins are all over the place. Things are quite uncertain which is exactly how I love it. Looking at all the wins, "12 Years a Slave" and "Her" have dominated in the main category. Alfonso Cuaron won the most in director category so far with Steve McQueen not far behind. Some acting categories have scattered wins except for lead actress and supporting actor. The frontrunners seems to be "12 Years a Slave", "Gravity" and "American Hustle". "Her" from the critics side. Anything can happen! This is my second last attempt at predicting the Oscars nominations. The next time I will post these would be a week before the nominations are announced.

Best Picture:

1) 12 Years a Slave
2) Gravity
3) American Hustle
4) Inside Llewyn Davis
5) Her
6) Captain Phillips
7) Nebraska
8) The Wolf of Wall Street
9) Saving Mr Banks
