Screen Actors Guild Award 2013 Winners.

Well the Screen Actors Guild Awards in a very shocking way, awarded best ensemble prize to Argo. Now as much as it got the recent boost with the big awards, no one expected that Argo would win the ensemble prize since there were much more brilliantly acted movies than Argo like Silver Linings Playbook, Lincoln and even Les Miserables. Argo's win tells us one thing only, everyone loves it no matter what. To me, this is an idiotic win that is solely based on the film's popularity only. Now all eyes on DGA and WGA, if they go with Argo too than the Oscar is pretty much locked but as of now, Argo and Lincoln are frontrunners and Silver Linings Playbook's major loss here in the main category is very unfortunate for it.

The other winners, specially Daniel-Day Lewis and Anne Hathaway were predicted since they won everything on their way here. Tommy Lee Jones too was the safest choice and i am sure he is up for the Oscar as well though he faces a bit of a competition with Philip Seymour Hoffman but hey, who cares about quality these days? I am also happy for Jennifer Lawrence's win even though i would have appreciated Jessica Chastain winning since she is my favorite of the year.

Below is the list of the winners:

Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role
Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln)

Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role
Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook)

Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role
Tommy Lee Jones (Lincoln)

Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role
Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables)

Best Ensemble
Ben Affleck, Alan Arkin, Kerry Bishé, Kyle Chandler, Rory Cochrane, Bryan Cranston, Christopher Denham, Tate Donovan, Clea DuVall, Victor Garber, John Goodman, Scoot McNairy and Chris Messina (Argo)

Best Stunt Ensemble

Producers Guild of America Awards 2013.

I don't know if its a surprise or not but Argo apparently won the 2013 PGA award for best picture. Now many people were still in denial over its potential even after the Critics Choice and Golden Globes, i know you aren't suppose to take them very seriously but we aren't talking about the Oscars yet, this is the Producers Guild where a well produced movie wins and it isn't effected much by the usual Academy politics because here, thousands of producers decides. Lincoln is suppose to win the Oscar because its an "Oscar movie" not because its great. Argo is a movie that has everything in it, its based on a true story and its a thriller, entertaining crowd pleasing movie with Hollywood featured in it. Its a very well made movie without any flaws, the only thing that bothers the most is that its entertaining movie and you don't really get to see any critical thing about it. Its a thriller, you are suppose to enjoy it in the moment and then forget about it. Lincoln for me is a much forced historical lesson that is respected not loved.

Now i don't know where do we go from here? If Argo wins the DGA prize too than it will either go the "Apollo 13" territory and lose best picture to Lincoln or maybe something else or it may go down in history like "Driving Miss Daisy" and win Oscar for best picture without a director win/nomination. I don't see how it can win the SAG ensemble but it has the support of the filmmakers and people around it. I personally like Argo, more so over Lincoln but neither of them are among my favorites of the year. I can only root for Zero Dark Thirty, Amour, Beasts of the Southern Wild and Silver Linings Playbook.

Below is the list of winners:

Best Picture: Argo
Animated Film: Wreck-it Ralph
Documentary Feature: Searching for Sugarman

Georgia Film Critics Association Awards 2013.

Georgia Film Critics Association announced their winners for the year 2012 with lots of love for Silver Linings Playbook, Skyfall and Beasts of the Southern Wild. Silver Linings Playbook won 4 awards for Picture, Actress, Adapted Screenplay and Ensemble. Skyfall won for Supporting Actress (surprisingly), Cinematography and Song while Beasts of the Southern Wild won for Production Design, Score and Breakthrough. Kathryn Bigelow finally won a director award after a big hiatus, i am glad this gutsy group went with it because the others (as much as they were appreciating the movie in the beginning) just completely shut it off due to the "controversy". Like that is what critics are for, to let someone or something effect their judgements about a movie. Anyways some really nice choices here.

Below is the full list of winners:

Best Motion Picture
Silver Linings Playbook

Best Director
Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty)

The Costume Designers Guild of America announced the nominations for the year 2012. Of course they are nominated in three different categories, Period, Fantasy and contemporary. North Carolina Film Critics Association 2013 Winners.

North Carolina Film Critics Association finally announced their winners for the year. They sure loved many movies since the winners in every category were all over the place which is good i think considering the equally spread the love. Silver Linings Playbook won the main prize, Ang Lee got director prize for Life of Pi, the actors from The Master, Les Miserables and Silver Linings Playbook won while the screenplay prizes went to Looper and Lincoln so there you go.

Below is the full list of the winners:

USC Scripter Nominations 2013.

USC Scripter nominations were announced with this time, six nominees making the list due to a fifth place tie. All the Oscar nominated Adapted Screenplays made the cut along with The Perks of Being a Wallflower. USC Scripter awards both the writers of the adapted work and the original one whether its a book, play or anything. Lincoln seems like the frontrunner as of now, no one can resist awarding Tony Kushner, Doris Goodwin for a Spielberg movie about Lincoln.

-Joshuah Bearman, author of the article 'The Great Escape', Antonio J. Mendez, author of 'The Master of Disguise', and screenwriter Chris Terrio, for Argo

-For Beasts of the Southern Wild, dramatist Lucy Alibar, who wrote the play 'Juicy and Delicious', and screenwriter Benh Zeitlin, who co-wrote the screenplay with Alibar

-Novelist Yann Martel and screenwriter David Magee for Life of Pi

-Doris Kearns Goodwin, author of 'Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln', and screenwriter Tony Kushner for Lincoln

-Stephen Chbosky, author of the novel 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower', as well as the screenplay based upon the book

-For Silver Linings Playbook, author Matthew Quick and screenwriter David O. Russell

70th Annual Golden Globe Awards 2013 Winners.

So the Golden Globe Awards happened last night where top prizes were given to movies like Argo and Les Miserables. I have yet to see the ceremony, i heard some good things about it (mostly the speeches and funny drunken celebrities). So Argo took home the award for best picture drama while Ben Affleck was awarded the director prize. Now i was hoping Lincoln to win the former award while the later one was expected. But i was silly to think that the HFPA will love a pure American flick over a movie like Argo which is exactly the kind of movie they love. On the other hand, Les Miserables won the Comedy/Musical prize which as much as i knew was going to happen since they can't resist awarding such big musicals over much smaller indie comedies (poor Juno and Little Miss Sunshine) but i still hoped that Silver Linings Playbook would win. So what does these two wins means for the Oscars? Nothing! First of all people should never take Golden Globes seriously (something to do every year) and secondly, this year is a complete surprise-fest so no one is a real contender, no one is sure winner unless they win. For me, Silver Linings Playbook and Lincoln are still the likeliest movies to win, Academy doesn't care for the HFPA and they rarely match up as far as the winners go.

Other thing to keep in mind is that Oscar nominations were announced after BFCA and HFPA turned in their ballots so the Oscar snubs shouldn't have had much of an impact in both of these ceremonies that is why Argo and Ben Affleck won at both Critics Choice and the Golden Globes. Talking about some surprises, Tarantino won original screenplay for Django Unchained while Christoph Waltz won supporting actor for the same movie. HFPA loves Tarantino but his win over Tony Kushner and Chris Terrio makes little sense here. Waltz for me was the second most likeliest to win after Tommy Lee Jones. Brave won best animated film, they love Pixar no matter what. Frankenweenie deserved it while Wreck-It Ralph was likeliest to win. I am particularly happy for Jessica Chastain who won for Zero Dark Thirty and as far as other acting winners go, Daniel Day-Lewis, Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence and Anne Hathaway won for their respective movies which was predictable. Life of Pi was definitely in to win the score award while no one can resist the superbly sung Adele song. Michael Haneke winning for Amour is a class act because HFPA are known for going towards an opposite route when it comes to foreign movies. Everyone knew Amour was winning but The Intouchables was likeliest to win. Overall, i think this year's awards race have been the most interesting one so far. Now all eyes are on the DGA, PGA and specially the freaking SAGs as they will give us just an idea of what to expect at the Oscars because this year is a different thing. I repeat, no one is a frontrunner.

Below is the complete list of the winners:

Best Picture – Drama
Argo

Best Picture – Musical or Comedy
Les Miserables

Critics Choice Awards 2013 Winners.

Argo was crowned as the best picture of 2012 at the Critics Choice Awards today. Director Ben Affleck also won for the same movie. I don't think its a surprise for me, Lincoln was never going to win either of these awards here while Zero Dark Thirty was considered for it but in the end, Argo was playing quite well with the critics before the whole idiotic controversy aroused. I am actually happy that they went with Argo but it would have been great if Zero Dark Thirty was given both these prizes since it deserved it more than any other movie. The big winners however was Silver Linings Playbook that got best ensemble, comedy movie, comedy actor and comedy actress. As well as Lincoln which got lead actor, adapted screenplay and score. Skyfall too got three awards, for action movie, action actor and original song. Zero Dark Thirty were given two very deserving awards, editing and more importantly, best actress for Jessica Chastain which i predicted would happen.

Oscars 2013 Nominations - the Goods, the Bads and the snubs.

Well the nominations for the 85th Annual Academy Awards were announced with bigger surprises than this already unpredictable award season have offered so far. First of all i really liked the way both Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone presented the nominees with lots of sarcasm and some really nice humor, i don't think they have ever done that before. Looking forward to Seth MacFarlane hosting the Oscars on the 24th of February. So coming back to the nominees, well there were some really big surprises and on the whole, this year's awards race have been quite exciting. The excitement was due to the unpredictability of it i mean it is fun when you don't know who is going to win and its far too boring for a movie to actually build that surefire winner consensus long before the ceremony.

BAFTA 2013 Nominations.

British Academy of Film and Television of BAFTA announced their nominations for 2012 movies. They are really important awards group, they are the British academy and even though their impact on the Oscar race isn't in most of the ways direct but it does matter. Both Lincoln and Les Miserables as expected showed a strong showing but surprisingly missed out on the nods for best director. Life of Pi, Argo and Zero Dark Thirty made the list apart from those two in the best film category. Skyfall showed a good showing as well and also the foreign movie Amour which got in for director, original screenplay and actress apart from foreign film. The nominees for best British film are Les Miserables, Skyfall, Seven Psychopaths, Anna Karenina and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. I am glad that Joaquin Phoenix got in the best actor here and i hope the same happens at the Oscars even though the chances of him being nominated faded long time ago. Ben Affleck surprisingly showed up out of nowhere in the same category, he hasn't been recognized by anyone for his acting so far. Some really good choices in the technical categories as well.

Below is the complete list of nominees:

Best Film
Argo
Life of Pi
Lincoln
Les Miserables
Zero Dark Thirty

Best Director
Ben Affleck (Argo)
Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty)
Michael Haneke (Amour)
Ang Lee (Life of Pi)
Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained)

Directors Guild of America Nominations 2013.

So this is what we all have been waiting for, the DGA nominees and they are in. Affleck, Spielberg, Bigelow and Lee are the four strongest contender that everyone predicted will be nominated, here and at the Oscars as well. But the last spot as always was a mystery. The most likeliest nominee was suppose to be David O'Russell for Silver Linings Playbook which i still think might happen at the Oscars if they are willing to not nominate Hooper this time. The other one was of course Quentin Tarantino for Django Unchained which was never going to happen. Guilds love Hooper, they love directors who achieves something of that sort, he is loved for his work mostly in television. I can see the same 5 nominees at the Oscars as well but there is a chance that Hooper just might not make it (but he will actually, i just can't see such a big movie not making it in this important category despite the mixed reviews). See this is the reason why my predictions change every day.

Best Director
Ben Affleck (Argo)
Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty)
Tom Hooper (Les Miserables)
Ang Lee (Life of Pi)
Steven Spielberg (Lincoln)

Denver Film Critics Society Awards 2013.

Denver Film Critics awarded Argo with both picture and director awards. Other winners in their categories are all over the places. Interesting wins for screenplay, Moonrise Kingdom won for original while Silver Linings Playbook won for adapted screenplay. Lining's star Jennifer Lawrence was crowned best actress, such a tight race between her and Jessica Chastain. Hans Zimmer won for his score in The Dark Knight Rises while Skyfall's title song won original song which is something i want to see happen at the Oscars as well.

Below is the complete list of the winners:

Best Film
Argo

Best Achievement in Directing
Ben Affleck (Argo)

Vancouver Film Critics Circle Awards 2013.

Vancouver Film Critics Circle sure loved Zero Dark Thirty and The Master. The former won 4 awards (picture, director, actress, screenplay) while the later won 3 awards (actor, supporting actor, supporting actress). I am glad to see them love both of these movies. I still have to see The Master but Zero Dark Thirty deserves all the praise it can get and even more. Another win for Holy Motors in the foreign film category, how about that?

Below is the complete list of the winners:

Best Film
Zero Dark Thirty

Best Director
Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty)

Online Film Critics Society Awards 2013.

Well Online Film Critics Society went with a mainstream choice as well, they awarded Argo the best picture prize. While Paul Thomas Anderson won best director which is quite good. Jessica Chastain is once again ahead in the race now, Anne Hathaway has won practically every time in supporting category and its nice to see some love for Philip Seymour Hoffman. I don't know if ParaNorman will win the animated picture Oscar or not but its been winning a lot of them from the critics.

Below is the complete list of the winners:

Best Picture
Argo

Best Director
Paul Thomas Anderson (The Master)

Alliance of Women Film Journalists Awards 2013.

Alliance of Women Film Journalists awarded Zero Dark Thirty with deserving 5 awards. It won picture, director, actress, original screenplay and editing. Beasts of the Southern Wild's score is my favorite of the year and i am happy it won. Philip Seymour Hoffman finally won something after a short hiatus, Jones was stealing everything. Women film journalists sure loved Zero Dark Thirty.

North Texas Film Critics Association Awards 2013.

North Texas Film Critics Association awarded best picture award to Lincoln which is only the second time any critics group awarded the main prize to Lincoln in this awards season while it makes up for Steven Spielberg's first win in best director category. Jennifer Lawrence now seems to be winning everything and is ahead of Jessica Chastain as far as wins go.

My Predictions for the 85th Academy Awards Nominations.

Well its that time of the year once again when critics or bloggers like me spend their days thinking about movies and their Oscars chances. There are just a few days left in the announcement for the Academy Awards nominations. The entire awards season comes to an end with the Oscars and as much as i see and appreciate critics awards individually, it all just seems moving towards this one prestigious event. I always have a love-hate relationship with the Oscars but i always look forward to them. 2012 Oscars race have been very interesting, one of the best ones that i can remember simply because there are so many good movies and none of them is a sure-fire frontrunner, nominee or winner so far. There are too many odds against every movie that there is. Argo and Zero Dark Thirty are both politics related movies but one is pretty entertaining account and the other one is "too harsh" as most of them say. If Lincoln has too much talky scenes with men sitting around and talking history and politics then Les Miserables is too daring and bold adaptation of a beloved musical. I have been changing my predictions a lot from the past few weeks, i am not sure which movie is going to make it in which category. As always, i had lots of trouble predicting the technical categories but anyway here is my predictions for the Oscars based on the precursor awards stats, my gut feelings and the usual awful academy politics.

Best Picture: (I'll go with 9)

1. Lincoln
2. Argo
3. Zero Dark Thirty
4. Silver Linings Playbook
5. Les Miserables
6. Life of Pi
7. Django Unchained
8. Beasts of the Southern Wild
9. Moonrise Kingdom

Best Director:

1. Ben Affleck, Argo
2. Steven Spielberg, Lincoln
3. Kathryn Bigelow, Zero Dark Thirty
4. Ang Lee, Life of Pi
5. David O. Russell, Silver Linings Playbook

North Carolina Film Critics Association Awards 2013 Nominations.

North Carolina Film Critics Association announced their nominees for the year 2012. A very interesting line-up which includes Lincoln, Zero Dark Thirty, Moonrise Kingdom, The Master, Silver Linings Playbook and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Its interesting how much of diversity there is in all the categories. They showed no love for Argo which is something that critics lately have been doing in excess.

Below is the full list of the nominees:

Best Narrative Film
Lincoln
The Master
Moonrise Kingdom
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Silver Linings Playbook
Zero Dark Thirty

Houston Film Critics Society Awards 2013.

Houston Film Critics Society joins one of the many critics groups who have been awarding Argo with best picture prize. I don't know how much of an impact this will have or how much this will effect the Oscars. Is this one of those last minute change when we see a particular Crow Pleaser winning everything (The King's Speech for example) when critics bodies and academy members seems to agree on that one movie that is pure harmless cinematic effort? Only time will tell. Holy Motors won foreign language prize which is superb. Also happy for the deserved Skyfall and Cloud Atlas wins.

Below is the complete list of the winners:

Best Picture
Argo

Best Director
Ben Affleck (Argo)

National Society of Film Critics Awards 2013.

National Society of Film Critics awarded Haneke's masterpiece Amour with best picture along with director and actress. On the other hand, The Master won supporting actress and cinematography while Lincoln won Actor and Screenplay. Also a surprise win for McConaughey for both Bernie and Magic Mike, he was out of the focus for the majority of the awards season in between.

Below is the full list of the winners:

Best Picture

Best Director
Michael Haneke (Amour)

Writers Guild of America Awards 2013 Nominations.

Writers Guild of America announced their nominees for the year 2012. First of all, congratulations to both Looper and The Perks of Being a Wallflower for making it to the Guilds final list in Original and Adapted Screenplay respectively. Flight made a surprising appearance here, i don't think its a great screenplay or a great movie but it made it here anyway over Django Unchained.

Below is the complete list of the nominees:

Best Original Screenplay:

John Gatins (Flight)
Rian Johnson (Looper)
Paul Thomas Anderson (The Master)
Wes Anderson & Roman Coppola (Moonrise Kingdom)
Mark Boal (Zero Dark Thirty)

Best Adapted Screenplay:

Chris Terrio (Argo)
David Magee (Life of Pi)
Tony Kushner (Lincoln)

David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook)

Central Ohio Film Critics Association Awards 2013.

Big day for Moonrise Kingdom as it won 5 awards at the 2013 Central Ohio Film Critics Association Awards. Which includes Best Film, Director, Original Screenplay, Score and Ensemble. Really happy with this kind of attention and deserved recognition this wonderful movie got with this awards group, it really needed this. The usual suspects, Day-Lewis, Lawrence, Hathaway Kushner etc won in their respective categories. Christoph Waltz have been getting lots of supporting actors awards lately, i thought Leonardo DiCaprio would get some since he looks great in the promos. They had an Overlooked Film category too, i don't agree with their pick, Killer Joe, but that is just me.

Below is the full list of the winners:

Best Film
Moonrise Kingdom

Best Director
Wes Anderson (Moonrise Kingdom)

Denver Film Critics Society Awards 2013 Nominations.

Denver Film Critics Society announced their nominees for the year 2012. The buzz for Django Unchained keeps on increasing, it joined Argo and Silver Linings Playbook as the nominees for best picture. Ben Affleck along with Kathryn Bigelow and Paul Thomas Anderson got direction nods. I wonder if the controversy of Zero Dark Thirty is the reason most of the critics groups are avoiding the movie, it was a real deal at the beginning, what happened all of a sudden? Do they really need to give a damn about "the politics of awards" they are critics for a reason. Its nice to see Quvenzhane Wallis get nominated, as well as The Perks of Being a Wallflower and a deserved nod of Score for The Dark Knight Rises.

Below is the complete list of the nominees:

Best Film
Argo
Silver Linings Playbook
Django Unchained

Art Directors Guild Awards Nominations 2013.

Nominations for Art Directors Guild Awards 2013 were announced. In a rather strong line-up, Les Miserables, Anna Karenina, Django Unchained along with Lincoln and Argo would compete to get the award in the Period Film category which is always my favorite. Other notable nominees in Fantasy and Contemporary categories includes The Hobbit, Life of Pi, Prometheus, Skyfall and Zero Dark Thirty. One of the stronger contender in this category, Moonrise Kingdom is missing though.

Below is the full list of the nominees:

Best Production Design – Period Film
Rick Carter (Lincoln)
Sarah Greenwood (Anna Karenina)
J. Michael Riva (Django Unchained)
Sharon Seymour (Argo)
Eve Stewart (Les Miserables)

Producers Guild of America 2013 Nominations.

Producers Guild of America just announced their nominations for the year 2013. In a very surprising turn, Skyfall joined Beasts of the Southern Wild and 8 other movies as the best pictures of the year 2012 chosen by thousands of the guild members. Due to its ineligibility in SAG and WAG, i though Beasts would be ineligible for PGA as well but it wasn't. Unfortunately The Master couldn't get in which shows how much extremely divisive and too "arty" that movie is even more so then 2010's The Tree of Life. I am happy overall and i think this is a perfect line-up and that Skyfall should be considered in this category. Best animated picture nominations includes the usuals as well.

Best Picture
Argo
Beasts of the Southern Wild
Django Unchained
Les Miserables
Life of Pi
Lincoln
Moonrise Kingdom
Silver Linings Playbook
Skyfall
Zero Dark Thirty

Best Animated Picture
Brave
Frankenweenie
ParaNorman
Rise of the Guardians
Wreck-It Ralph

Central Ohio Film Critics Association Awards 2012 Nominations.

Central Ohio Film Critics Association announced their nominations for the year 2012. Their best picture line-up includes 11 movies with some surprising additions of The Cabin in the Woods and Looper. There is no love for Amour as it is absent from Foreign Language film category as well as in any acting nominations.

Below is the complete list of the nominees:
